WHAT MAKES CONNECTICUT GC A DIFFERENT TYPE OF YOUTH HOCKEY?

The Right Model for Real Progress

Most youth hockey programs prioritize standings, tournaments, and travel. At Connecticut GC, we prioritize what actually works: more ice time, consistent skill development, and a schedule that lets families breathe. If your player has big goals—high school, prep, college, or beyond—this is where they’ll build the foundation to get there.

Built for skill development

We’re not trying to win the next weekend’s game—we’re building great players by age 18. Our program is inspired by proven global development models, including Swedish Modo and Russia’s Red Army.

Our Core Development Focus:

  • Skills First: Skating, puck control, shooting, and passing

  • Smart Play: Head-up hockey, decision making, and awareness

  • Mental Game: Hard work, focus, grit, and respect

  • Weekly Competition Days: Measured, fair competition for all players

Practices that drive real improvement

Forget rushed 1-hour ice times. Our practices are longer and more intentional—with consistent coaching and a shared philosophy. Every session builds on the last, with time to focus, learn, and actually master what’s being taught.

Weekly Breakdown:

  • 6–8 hours on the ice

  • Skills-based stations with focused coaching

  • Regular skill assessments

  • Progress tracked across skating, shooting, and decision-making

  • Specialized skills sessions available

A smarter approach to games

Yes we play games, but we play them with purpose. Winning and losing both matter—but development matters more. Every game is an opportunity to apply what was learned in practice.

What you can count on:

  • 20–42 meaningful games per year

  • Focused on player development, not rankings

  • Local exhibition games only—no weekend road-warrior routine

  • Coaching happens at the bench, not from the bench

  • Only the head coach speaks to refs

  • Players are given personal goals for every game
